Hoodoo: The Persistent American Magic Tradition 90 minutes with authors Jack Montgomery and Tony Kail – 12:00 noon
Hoodoo is a word that gives rise to a number of images both positive and negative in our modern society. Many of us have seen it portrayed in movies like “The Skeleton Key” and “Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil” as well as in blues music like “Got my Mojo working” and “Hoodoo Man Blues.” This presentation hopes to present an honest and accurate portrait of the people, places and things of Hoodoo as well as the history of it in the Southeast and Memphis, TN region. Your hosts will be author, musician and university professor Jack Montgomery and former law enforcement officer, historian and celebrated author Tony Kail. Together they will take you on a 90 minute journey into this often secret, hidden world of magic, mysticism and mystery. They will also be bringing a collection of authentic Hoodoo artifacts not often seen in public anymore.

EBBO AND THE ORISHA: A lesson in Southern Rootwork with Papa Oloyada – 2:00 pm
Have you ever felt a disconnect between divinity and yourself? What if I could show you, that you were living in the heart of Divine on Earth. The Orisha, were first realized by the Yoruba people of West Africa. They are in the water we drink and the paths we take. Even though some people are not aware of the Orisha’s presence, they continually look over everyone as a silent parent. For those of us whose spirits have been aware of the Orisha, a symbiotic relationship is created. Creating a relationship between child and divine parent, through feeding of the Orisha, known as the sacred tradition of ebbo. In this class we will discuss Southern Rootwork, the Orisha, and give a display of giving ebbo to Orisha Elegba, while allowing participants to give petitions, to open new roads in their lives.
